Use pad of notes metaphor & have stacks (by color) below board from which to drag new items to board
I don't like an interface that takes me out of the perspective of the board (and away from visibility of the parent item I'm thinking against) to create new cards. i want to to be able to drag a card to its spot, type its title with near-zero distraction from the board, and immediately drag the next one. The current interface creates a cognitive challange when doing the expand part of expand/collapse.

The more one can stay in a single view the better. I'm less concerned with the implementation than with the goals: stay in one place, and let me work intuitively.

this would be cool, but I'm aware that on laptop screen, screen realestate is already at a premium, so I'd suggest the "pad of notes" icon should be small enough to fit in the existing left menu bar.
